Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers are used to restore volume and fullness to the face and skin to improve moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and vertical lip wrinkles. They may also be used to supplement areas such as the temples, jawline, cheekbones and lips. Until recently, collagen injections were the preferred method of restoring lost volume to the face, but most required skin testing for patient sensitivity. Other forms of collagen required harvesting one’s own tissues to create an injection. The effects of collagen injections typically lasted 2 – 4 months.

Today’s injectable fillers are a new, effective alternative for facial rejuvenation in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. If you live on the Central Coast or in the Central Valley and you’re considering injectable fillers to reduce facial wrinkles, we invite you to call  (805) 481-3733 or request a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Paul Stallman. Injectable Fillers in Pismo Beach with Dr. Stallman

Today, beautiful, more long-lasting results may be obtained through new wrinkle fillers. Restylane®, Restylane Lyft® and JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel are injectable fillers made of hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance already existing in our bodies. It is a clear gel which is biodegradable and fully biocompatible with our own hyaluronic acid. These fillers have been found to be extremely safe and allergy testing is not required.

Fillers are injected into wrinkles or into areas that need augmentation. The procedure is performed in the office setting with either topical or local anesthetics. Dr. Stallman customizes the exact injection pattern, type of filler and volume to meet an individual patients’ aesthetic goals. The amount of filler used determines the extent of wrinkle correction. After treatment there may be some redness or swelling of the treated areas. This usually lasts less than seven days. More significant serious side effects can occur but are fortunately unusual. It is therefore important that a very experienced injector such as Dr. Stallman perform your injections so as to minimaize risks. Dr. Stallman was one of the first physicians in the county to utilize Restylane and was one of the investigators in an FDA approved scientific study testing Juvederm prior to its release to the rest of the area’s practitioners. The beneficial effects of injectable fillers usually last about six to nine months though in some, they can last well beyond a year.

In addition to reliable improvement of facial wrinkles, these new fillers may also be used to improve the appearance of lower eyelid puffiness and hollows under the eye. Some people prefer this non-invasive option to surgery for the lower lid. The volume-enhancing effects of fillers may be combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic to provide an even more noticeable level of improvement.

Meet Ann Marie

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC is another hyaluronic acid based filler which is used to enhance facial volume rather than treat specific wrinkles. Over time, we tend to lose fat in the mid face or cheek region. As this occurs, the skin and tissues of the face are no longer adequately supported and a youthful, rounded profile gives way to a flatter, more aged appearance. VOLUMA XC is an FDA-approved filler specifically designed to improve this region of the face. It works by adding volume to the midface region, restoring support and subtly lifting the cheek area. Dr. Stallman was one of the first physicians in the Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo areas to use VOLUMA XC and has found that most patients achieve an improvement which is just not attainable with “wrinkle specific” fillers. His patients have been pleased with a natural, more youthful appearance without looking as though the cheeks are overly full. Effects of adequate correction have been shown to last out to 2 years. Of course, best results may be achieved by combining VOLUMA XC treatment with JUVÉDERM to areas with more superficial wrinkles, such as the lip and nasolabial or marionette areas. Other treatments such as BOTOX for dynamic/active wrinkles and skin rejuvenation with microneedling, lasers and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) may be performed along with these fillers.

Dr. Stallman also offers an injectable filler named Radiesse®. Radiesse is a suspension of calcium hydroxylapatite particles in a gel which is also used to improve facial wrinkles and restore volume. It too is very safe for injection and does not require skin testing since the mineral component is the same as that found in our bones. The effects of Radiesse can last beyond one year.

Another popular filler option is Sculptra. This filler is a bit different from the others. Rather than add immediate volume to a given area, Sculptra stimulates the area it was placed to grow its own collagen. This process can take 6-7 weeks and often needs to be repeated to obtain full correction. For our patients here on the Central Coast, we find this to be an excellent choice to create natural appearing fullness to areas that have lost volume over time. It is particularly helpful in areas such as cheeks, sunken areas of the outer cheeks and mid face, and can provide structure along the jawline and fill the temple region in people who are developing depressions or early concavities in that area. Sculptra may last out to two years and beyond.

With so many options, it’s easy to feel a bit confused. The best way to decide? Call us at  (805) 481-3733 or request a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Stallman or nurse practitioner Ann Marie Carvajal. The practice welcomes patients from Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, Atascadero and other Central Coast and Central Valley towns. They’ll work with you to design a program that’s right for your needs.
